Next month’s World Cup, which is controversial for the reasons outlined in this article, has been particularly criticised by human rights activists owing to the deaths of thousands of migrant workers since the country was awarded the right to host the tournament in 2010. The vast majority of sponsors and kit manufacturers at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar have declined to offer support for migrant workers when asked by The Athletic.
